CHARLES EUGENE GILES, age 88 of Clanton, passed away on July 1, 2025, at his residence. He was born on July 19, 1936; the son of the late Cecil Eugene Giles and the late Ruby Stearns Giles.
He was owner/operator of Giles Construction and Chilton Septic Service. While with Chilton Septic Service, he researched how to make the best use of his land for his business and was approved for the first solid waste landfill in the State of Alabama. He then taught continuing education classes at Auburn University on landfill solid waste disposal.
In addition, in the 1970’s he was a Stallworth member of the Republican Party in Chilton County, where he was a member of its first executive committee. He was a pivotal force for local races where republicans were first elected to key positions in the county. He always believed in the conservative values of the Party and worked to “make a difference” for his community.
He and his late wife met on a blind date in 1962 after a relatively short courtship. They married on June 7, 1963. At which time he transitioned her from a “city girl” by moving her to Clanton, Alabama. Surprisingly, she made the transition for him, and they remained together until her death on May 26, 2003.
He loved socializing with friends and family at every possible opportunity. Over the years, many became acquainted with him while he was out and about around Clanton. He entertained everyone by recounting his stories of “the good ole days.” In addition, he was always willing to share his interest in 57 Chevrolets with all who were willing to listen. These cars were his favorite hobby, in a way unique only to him.
Those who knew him were aware of his to quick wit and outspoken personality. He was known for “telling it like it is,” so you knew not to ask if you didn’t want to know his opinion. Throughout the years, he told many that “he never made a lot of money, but he made a living.”
He is survived by his daughter Charla (Terry) Giles Doucet of Verbena; his son Charlton (Donna) Giles of Gadsden; his grandchildren, Kaylee Doucet of Verbena, Anna Beth Giles of Gadsden, and Katie Giles of Gadsden; his sister, Ethel Giles Lowery of Clanton; and special caregiver Ramonda Sitz of Verbena, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; Joyce Joiner Giles, his parents; Cecil and Ruby (Stearns) Giles; and his infant brother, James Cecil Giles.
