Douglas Wayne Smitherman

DOUGLAS WAYNE SMITHERMAN, age 81 of Maplesville, passed away on December 8, 2023 at his residence. He was born in Chilton County on December 5, 1942; the son of the late Doil Smitherman and the late Inez Payne Smitherman.

Doug was a former welder and a member of Boilermakers Local 108. He retired from Burke’s Mechanical in Brent, AL.  He loved the outdoors where he enjoyed fishing and turkey hunting. He loved to watch nature. He was an avid Alabama football fan who enjoyed watching his team win and giving a good ole “Roll Tide!” He was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. He is remembered by grandchildren as a hero to anyone.

He is survived by: Wife, Charlotte Smitherman; Daughter, Gina (Johnny) Sanders; Daughter, Tammy (Phillip) Garrett; Grandchildren: Amy, Christy, Jason, Tyler, Kendall, Cory, Haley, Mitch, and Matt; Great Grandchildren: Katlyn, Coley, Carlee, Caylee, Bowen, Malley, Ayden, Mia, Brianne, and Gus; Great-Great Grandchildren: Rylee, Isla, and Nora; Sister, Net Smitherman; Sister, Wanda (Steve) Bistline; Brother, Roger (Bonnie) Smitherman; and a host of other relatives and close family friends.

He is preceded in death by: Son, Jeff Smitherman; Parents, Doil and Inez Smitherman; Brothers: Daniel Smitherman, Roland Smitherman, Bobby Smitherman, and Randy Smitherman; and Sister, Alice Faye Carter.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 3:00pm from the Chapel of Ellison Memorial Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The family request in lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution to the Chilton County Humane Society to honor Doug’s love of animals.
