Doveard Smitherman

Doveard Smitherman, age 89, of Clanton, passed away peacefully at his residence on June 19, 2025.

He was born on May 3, 1936, in Chilton County, Alabama, the son of the late Elijah Smitherman and the late Ruby Hand Smitherman. A skilled carpenter by trade, Doveard took pride in his work and in providing for his family. He was a man who found great joy in simple pleasures—family gatherings, time spent with his grandchildren, and the fellowship of gospel singings.

Doveard was a devoted member of New Hope Baptist Church in Jemison, affectionately known as the "Old Smith Schoolhouse." His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he carried it with quiet strength and joy.

He is survived by his daughter, Virginia (Jackie) Patterson of Clanton; grandchildren: Justin Patterson, Jason (Rebecca) Patterson, Adrienne Patterson, Jackson (Lexie) Patterson, David Smitherman, and Jessica Wilson; ten great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Annette Smitherman; brother, Kelvin (Faye) Smitherman; sister, Tiny Johnson; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margie Smitherman; son, Bony Smitherman; sisters: Mary Nell Barnett, Velma Moates, Pauline Lucas, Mildred Littleton, and Betty Edwards; and brothers: Lloyd Smitherman and Bobby Joe Smitherman.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Ellison Memorial Funeral Home, with Rev. Jack Jones officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Burial will follow at Clanton City Cemetery in Clanton, Alabama.
