James Ervin Caudill, Sr., age 77, of Jemison, Alabama, passed away suddenly on March 29, 2026, at his residence. He was born on September 16, 1948, on a farm in Whiteburg, Kentucky.
James proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict. His bravery and sacrifice were recognized through numerous commendations, including the Purple Heart, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars. His service stands as a testament to his courage, resilience, and deep sense of duty.
Following his military service, James built a career as a long-haul truck driver, a profession that carried him across the continental United States. He embraced the open road and the independence it offered, dedicating many years to the work before eventually retiring. In his retirement, he spent 16 years in Alabama, where he enjoyed being near his family.
James was known for his lighthearted spirit and sense of humor. To know him was to love him—and often to find yourself the good-natured target of one of his pranks. Above all, he was a devoted father and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather who took great pride in his family.
He is survived by his sons, James Caudill, Jr. (Lilly) of Jemison, William Caudill of Jemison, and Scott Caudill of Jemison; his grandchildren, Tiffany (Jay) Roberson of Alabaster, Stacy (Ty) Higginbotham of Calera, Brandon (Destiny) Caudill of Jemison, Emily Caudill of Jemison, Kristen (Brandon) Green of Thorsby, and Chaz (Kerrigan) Caudill of Thorsby; his great-grandchildren, Imogene Roberson, Hank Roberson, Ayden Higginbotham, Brisden Higginbotham, Harper Caudill, Haylen Caudill, Baker Caudill, Keylan Green, John Deere Green, Colton Green, Cayden Caudill, Damien Caudill, and Felicity Caudill; and his sisters, Susan Dissmute, Joyce Letson, and Mania Woodby, all of Kentucky, along with many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth Caudill, and the mother of his children, Emily Caudill.
