James Neaves, Sr. Obituary

JAMES LEE NEAVES SR., age 89, of Calera, Alabama, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026, at his daughter’s home in Columbiana, surrounded by the love of his family.

He was born April 8, 1936, in Limestone County, Alabama, the son of the late Lee Melvin Neaves and the late Naomi McMahan Neaves. James honorably served his country in the United States Army, where he developed the technical skills that would guide him into a long and successful career as a technical engineer in the telecommunications industry.

Above all else, James was a family man. His family was his life, and he treasured every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and the generations that followed. His steady presence, quiet strength, and faithful love will be remembered always.

James was a devoted member of The Lighthouse Church in Thorsby, where he faithfully worshiped for many years and formed many lasting friendships.

He is survived by his daughters, Geneva Hollis of Calera, Patricia (Brian) Poole of Calera, and Janet (Randy) Hagerla of Columbiana; his sons, Jeffery Neaves of Calera and Danny (Laura) Neaves of Thorsby; grandchildren, Holly Criss, Misty (Kevin) Martinez, Elizabeth Edwards, Thomas Hollis, Natalie Neaves, and Ella Kate Neaves; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; his brother, Gerald (Mary) Neaves of Pinson; and his sister, Brenda Cooper of Birmingham; along with numerous extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Loretta Gambrell Neaves; his son, James Lee Neaves, Jr.; his grandson, Jimmy Allen Simmons, Jr.; his parents, Lee Melvin and Naomi Neaves; one brother; and two sisters.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 14, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at The Lighthouse Church in Thorsby, with Rev. Travis Bussey officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to The Lighthouse Church.

A private family inurnment will be held at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.
