JAMES WINDHAM SICKLES, JR., of Shelby, Alabama, passed away peacefully at his home on April 20, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on March 23, 1950, in Walker County, Alabama, he was the beloved son of the late James Windham Sickles, Sr. and the late Effie Mae Short.
James proudly served his country during the Vietnam Era as a member of the United States Army, demonstrating the same strength and commitment that he carried throughout his life. A hardworking and entrepreneurial spirit, he was the former owner and operator of J&S Tile Company, as well as the Cow Pasture Cafe in Clanton, Alabama, where he brought together his passion for people and good food.
He found great joy in life’s simple pleasures—gardening, raising chickens, and his annual deep sea fishing trip, which he looked forward to each year. A devoted University of Alabama football fan, James rarely missed a game and cheered on the Crimson Tide with unwavering enthusiasm.
Above all, James loved his family and friends deeply. He was a man who offered his time, laughter, and kindness freely, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He is survived by: Wife, Lyla J. Sickles of Shelby; Son, Jay Sickles of Shelby; Son, Johnathan Sickles of Shelby; Son, Joeseph Sickles of Shelby; Daughter, Stephanie Williamson; Grandchildren: Jaycob Sickles, Hunter Sickles, Holden Sickles, and Sadie Sickles; Sister, Jeanette Sickles of Cordova; Brother, Bill Owens of Ohatchee; Brother, Harold Sickles of Corner; and Sister, Denise Owens of Cordova.
He is preceded in death by: Son, Brent Sickles; Father, James W. Sickles, Sr.; Mother, Effie Mae Short; Sister, Betty Early; Brother, Tim Short; and sister Robin Short.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Ellison Memorial Funeral Home in Clanton, Alabama.
A graveside service with military honors will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama, with Rev. Roger Hamaker officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions to assist with final expenses.
