JAMES EDWARD “SCOOTER” BARNETT, age 80, of Jemison, Alabama, passed away peacefully at his residence on February 5, 2026.
Born in Chilton County on December 7, 1945, he was the son of the late Clyde Edward Barnett and the late Daisy Martin Barnett.
Scooter spent his career as a dedicated truck driver, a job that suited his hardworking spirit and love for the open road. More than anything, he was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather whose family meant the world to him.
A lifelong member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Jemison, Scooter faithfully served his Lord and church family in many capacities throughout the years. His faith was the foundation of his life. He found great joy in southern gospel music, especially quartet singing. Those who knew him will remember his gentle heart, steady presence, and the simple, genuine way he loved others.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn Barnett of Jemison; sons, Robbie (Gwen) Barnett of Prattville, Clyde (Candace) Barnett of Jemison, Jeremy (Susan) Barnett of Irondale, and Dennis Barnett of Jemison; grandchildren, Alyssa (Matthew) Robinson, Brannon Barnett, Dawson Barnett, and Clyde (Kaylee) Barnett; great-grandchildren, Levi Robinson and Taylor Brooks; brother-in-law, John (Debra) Kee of Clanton; sisters-in-law, Betty Hucks of Jemison and Barbara (David) Jones of Clanton; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Ember Southard; daughter-in-law, Mary Barnett; and his parents, Clyde and Daisy Barnett.
Visitation will be held Sunday, February 8, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Jemison, Alabama.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. from Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Jasper Carden officiating.
Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Food Pantry, 561 County Road 52, Jemison, Alabama 35085.
