Jerry Wayne Thompson, age 86 of Clanton, passed away on March 11, 2026 at Baptist East Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama. He was born in Chilton County on January 26, 1940, the son of the late Alford Enoch Thompson and the late Susie Eliza Baker Thompson.
Jerry spent his life working as a skilled woodworker, a trade he deeply loved and took great pride in. Through his craftsmanship, he created many pieces that reflected both his patience and attention to detail. In addition to woodworking, he also enjoyed leatherworking, another craft that allowed him to use his hands and creativity to produce lasting works.
Outside of his work, Jerry had a lifelong passion for horses. He was a founding member of the Central Alabama Horse Club, where he was affectionately known by many as “Cowboy.” Over the years, he faithfully served the club in many roles, including a term as its president. His love for horses and the friendships he formed through the club brought him great joy and created many cherished memories.
Jerry’s faith was an important part of his life. He loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Pinedale Assembly of God in Clanton. He treasured his time of worship there and deeply valued the friendships he formed within the church family, especially the close relationship he shared with his pastor, Thurmond Cleckler.
Above all else, Jerry will be remembered for the love he had for his family. He was a devoted husband, a caring father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather who cherished the time spent with those he loved most.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Paulette Thompson of Clanton; his sons, Michael Thompson of Clanton and David (Jennifer) Thompson of Clanton; his grandchildren, Heath (Frankie) Thompson, Jeff (Ashley) Thompson, Kristen (Adam) Payton, and Tessa (Tristan) Short; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. from Jerry’s beloved Pinedale Assembly of God Church with Rev. Thurmond Cleckler officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial will follow in the Pinedale Assembly of God Cemetery in Clanton, Alabama.
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
