Joe Calvin Elliott, Jr.
October 15, 1933 ~ September 11, 2023 (age 89) 89 Years Old
Joe Calvin Elliott, Jr. passed away Monday September 11, 2023 at the age of 89 and is now in
the arms of his Lord and Savior.
Coach Elliott was born and raised in Centreville, Alabama. He attended Marion Military
Institute and the University of West Alabama (Livingston). He played football and baseball for
both colleges. He was drafted into the Army and served in the Korean War. He later returned to
Livingston University and earned his BS in History and later his Masters in Administration from
the University of Montevallo. He became a teacher and coach for his alma mater in Bibb
County. He coached the 1970 Bibb County High School basketball team to a state
championship. Many of his players were highly recruited to the college level. He assisted many
athletes in all sports to attain scholarships. He was offered some college jobs out of state, but
turned them down because he was dedicated to Bibb County.
He later became principal of BCHS and eventually served as the Superintendent for the Bibb
County school system. After he retired in the 1990’s, he became greatly involved with
American Legion baseball and was later awarded the 2016 Distinguished Service Award by the
Alabama Baseball Coaches Association.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Jane and his parents Joe Calvin Elliott, Sr. and Ruby
He is survived by two sons, Joe Tom(Melissa) Elliott and Frank(Nancy) Elliott; two daughters,
Gail Elliott and Joy Bailey(Danny); four grandchildren, Blade, Sawyer, Will and Tyler Elliott.
Pallbearers will be Will Elliott, Tyler Elliott, Matt Downs, Barry Dean, Dennis Freeman and Mark
Lawrence. Honorary pallbearers: Brown Bolding, Bobby McAfee, Earnie Wallace, Byron Hicks,
Jimmy Fondren, Frank Nichols, Morris Moody and Joe Crocker.
A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Friday September 15, 2023 at Sandy Chapel
Cemetery with Pastor John Skinner officiating.
Memorial contributions can be made to Sandy Chapel Cemetery Fund.
