JULIUS ELVIN “SHINE” POPWELL, age 82 of Clanton, passed away on January 5, 2026, at his residence. He was born in Chilton County on June 22, 1943, the son of the late Johnny Popwell and the late Dyzina Friday Popwell.
Shine came from very humble beginnings, learning early in life the value of hard work, honesty, and perseverance. He began his career as a mechanic, working with Firestone in Clanton and later with Ford Tractor in Thorsby, where he developed the skills and work ethic that would guide him throughout his life.
Through determination and countless long hours, Shine went on to become a successful business owner, owning and operating Shine’s Quik Stop for over 30 years. Through his daily interactions at the store, he became well known and respected throughout the community. Shine had a heart for helping others and quietly assisted many people along the way, including those who were struggling to make ends meet. His business was not only a livelihood, but also a place where kindness, fairness, and compassion were freely given.
Shine worked tirelessly to care for and provide for his family, whom he loved deeply. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, perseverance, and unwavering sense of responsibility. He was known for his honesty—sometimes even to a fault—and for the integrity with which he lived his life. His legacy is one of dedication, generosity, and genuine love for both family and community.
