MONROE GRADY MOATES, age 82 of Verbena, passed away peacefully at his residence on October 16, 2025. He was born in Chilton County on March 28, 1943, the son of the late George Washington “G.W.” Moates and the late Addie Velma Thomas Moates.
Monroe dedicated over 47 years to a respected career in construction. As a project superintendent with Brice Building, he was known for his leadership, integrity, and craftsmanship. His work stood as a testament to his strong character and commitment to doing things the right way.
Outside of work, Monroe found joy in the quiet rhythm of farm life. He loved raising cattle and spending time outdoors tending to his land. Whether on a job site or on the farm, he took pride in seeing the fruits of his hard work come to life.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a man whose word could always be trusted.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Moates of Verbena; daughter, Renee Smith of Hoover; sons, Mike Moates of Verbena and Ronald Peppers of Verbena; grandchildren, Taylor Smith of Birmingham, Amy Smith Gibson of Birmingham, Samantha Baker of Clanton, Devin Sanders of Verbena, Josh Peppers of Verbena, and David Peppers of Verbena; along with 11 great-grandchildren who brought him great joy.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 20, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Ellison Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. Jeremy Jones officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow in Chilton Memorial Gardens in Clanton, AL.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Dementia Society of America.
