Opal (Smith) Oaks

OPAL SMITH OAKS, of Birmingham, AL, passed peacefully on December 19, 2024 at the age of 86. She was born in the Union Springs Community in Randolph, AL and attended Maplesville School. She married the love of her life, Emmett Oaks, in 1955. She continued her education at Samford University where she received a nursing degree.

Opal was a devoted registered nurse who loved her profession. She was always willing to share stories of life as a nurse and her love of God’s scripture.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16

Opal was a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church. She lived a life full of courage and compassion and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Emmett Oaks, and her parents, Joe and Elizabeth Smith.

She is survived by children: Dr. Dan Oaks, Donna (Waymon) Rasco, and Debbie Oaks; grandson, Tray (Melissa) Rasco; and great grandson, Connor Rasco.

A private family burial will be held in the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL with Pastor John Haines of Briarwood Presbyterian Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Briarwood Presbyterian Church or to Wreaths Across America – ALANCM.
