GENE RAYMOND “RAY” HITCHCOCK, JR., age 72 of Jemison, entered into the presence of the Lord on January 21, 2026, at his residence. He was born in Jefferson County, Alabama, on November 17, 1953, the son of the late Rev. Gene Raymond Hitchcock, Sr. and Peggy Pate Hitchcock.
Ray was a beloved son, family member, and friend whose life brought joy to all who knew him. A special needs man with a gentle heart and joyful spirit, Ray had a unique way of touching lives through his warm smile, sincere nature, and loving presence. He reminded everyone around him of the beauty found in kindness, patience, and unconditional love.
Ray had a deep love for music, especially Southern gospel music, which brought him great joy. In church, he could often be found quietly directing the choir from his seat, joyfully participating in worship in his own special way. Throughout the years, Ray could also be found with instruments ranging from a saxophone to a harmonica, faithfully attempting to play along with the music of the church. His sincere efforts brought smiles and warmth to all who witnessed them.
He dearly loved attending church, especially Sunday School, where he could often be found in the children’s department enjoying the smiles, laughter, and playful interactions of the children, who were naturally drawn to his gentle spirit. Ray also traveled to many Southern Baptist Convention meetings with his mother and late father, experiences that were very special to him. His family fondly believes that Ray patiently tolerated the preaching—always with a smile—simply so he could enjoy the blessed music that followed.
Ray was preceded in death by his beloved father, Rev. Gene R. Hitchcock, Sr.
He is survived by his loving mother, Peggy Hitchcock of Jemison, along with a host of cousins who cherished him dearly.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. from Jemison First Baptist Church, with Rev. Daniel Wilson officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial will follow in Midway Memorial Gardens in Jemison, Alabama.
The family respectfully requests no flowers; memorial contributions may be made in Ray’s memory to your favorite charity.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff of Southern Care Hospice of Clanton for their compassionate care and concern over the past year. The family also wishes to thank the M4A Program and Ray's private sitter, Norma Dean for all they have done.
