Ronald Dovey Obituary

Ronald (Ron) Charles Dovey, age 83 of Clanton passed away on February 14, 2024 in his home. He was born on February 29, 1940 in Detroit, MI; the son of the late Harry Dovey and the late Jessie Lebeck Dovey.

Ron attended Chadsey High School in Detroit Michigan where he lettered on the swim team and studied culinary arts. He went on to study at the Culinary Institute of America in New Haven Connecticut and became a chef. In addition to being a successful restaurant chef he also ran a school cafeteria at Canterbury private school, managed vending machines, and ran the cafeteria inside the Lee County Justice Center as an employee of the Florida Division of Blind Services.

He served in the National Guard for a short period of time.

Ron was an avid fisherman and loved boating. He was an extremely skilled wood craftsman and created wonderful works of art with wood.

He attended Clanton First Methodist Church faithfully and was a committed follower of Jesus Christ. He led several ministries including Sunday School and small groups. He helped to lead several mission trips to Guatemala and was very involved in Emmaus and especially the prison ministry of Kairos. He became ordained in the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in order to serve as clergy for Kairos events.

He was an extremely generous man and will be greatly missed.

Ron is survived by his wife, Ruth Scott Fairley of Clanton, AL; Sons, Rev. Brian (Linda) Dovey of Troy, AL and Scott (Liz) Dovey of Ft. Myers, FL; Grandchildren, Renee Dovey of Troy, AL, Justin Dovey of Ocala, FL, Elizabeth (Matthew) Colson of Arvada, CO; and Ryan (Kai) Dovey of Owasco, NY; Great-Grandchildren, Lily Dovey of Owasco, NY, Wynn and Rommy Colson of Arvada, CO;  Brother, Rick (Julie) Dovey of Pownal, VT; Nieces, Cheryl (John) Goodson of Tallahassee, FL; and Suzy (Jeff) Kalin of Sarasota, FL; and Nephews, Peter Dovey of Belmont, CA; and Cole Dovey of Middlebury, VT.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Harry and Jessie (Lebeck) Dovey; Wife, Nancy (Brooks) Dovey; Son, Craig Dovey; Granddaughter, Eve Dovey; Great Grandson Jack Colson; and Sister, Carol (Dovey) Calhoun.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Clanton First Methodist Church Missions in his memory. Memorial arrangements are to be determined.
