Shirley Mims Obituary

SHIRLEY ANN (WATSON) MIMS, age 86, of Jemison, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2025, at her residence. She was born in Chilton County on August 3, 1939, the daughter of the late Henry Clay Watson and the late Lennie Onita Lightsey Watson.

For 32 years, Shirley faithfully served as the lunchroom manager at Jemison High School, where she provided countless meals—and countless smiles—to generations of students and staff. Her dedication and love for “her kids” left a lasting impression on all who passed through those cafeteria doors. Following her retirement, she continued giving of herself by volunteering at Jemison Elementary School, assisting with various school events and activities.

Each morning in her later years, Shirley could be found at “The Brain Center”—the affectionate name given to the Jemison McDonald’s—where she enjoyed coffee, conversation, and laughter with friends. She loved traveling, cooking, and was especially known for her famous coconut cake that everyone looked forward to at family gatherings.

Shirley was a faithful member of Mars Hill Baptist Church as long as her health allowed, where she gladly served in the kitchen, helping prepare meals for church functions and funerals. Her servant’s heart and generous spirit touched all who knew her.

Above all, Shirley will be remembered for the deep love she had for her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and sister whose kindness and care will be cherished always.

She is survived by her sons, Clay (Terri) Mims of Warner Robins, GA; Ken (Susan) Mims of Thorsby; and Keith (Christy) Mims of Foley; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and her sister, Betty Williams of Jemison.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Mims; parents, Henry and Lennie Watson; and brother, Kenneth Ray.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. from Mars Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Clark Thompson, Rev. Evie Megginson, and Rev. William Earl Short officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery in Jemison, Alabama.

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
– Galatians 6:9 (KJV)
