Raymond Lee Downs, Sr., age 73 of the Mineral Springs Community in Clanton, AL; and a native of Rome, GA, passed from this walk of life on July 11, 2019 at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, AL. He was born in Rome, GA on April 3, 1946; the son of the late James Alvin Downs and the late Elsie Marie Turner Downs.
Raymond was a 1964 graduate of Coosa High School in Rome, GA where he was captain of the football team. He served his country honorably in the United States Army with service during the Vietnam Conflict. He would go on to have a 35 year career as a masonry contractor, and was also a master farrier for 40 years. He was a former pipefitter with Local 72 out of Atlanta, GA. Raymond was also a member of the Coosa Masonic Lodge in Rome, GA.
He is survived by: Wife of 35 years, Jane Ash Downs; Son, Lee Downs; Daughter, Erin S. Downs; Step-Daughter, Stephanie (Tim) Corbin; Several Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren; Sister, Lynda (William) Moore; Brother, Michael Downs; Sister, Cynthia (Harry) Burkett; Sister, Peggy (Steve) Brown; Sister-in-Law, Barbara A. White; Brother-in-Law, Don (Janna) Ash; and Step Granddaughter, Hannah Rose Corbin. Hannah was his favorite softball pitcher, and he never missed a game in which she played.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 15, 2019 at 1:00pm EST from Calvary Baptist Church located at 101 Broadus Rd. NE in Rome, GA with Dr. Gary Graves officiating.
A public visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial with military and Masonic honors will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens in Rome, GA.
