REV. GENE RAYMOND HITCHCOCK, age 88 of Jemison, entered his Heavenly home on February 9, 2021. He was born in Lee County, MS on November 18, 1932; the son of the late Omar Hitchcock and the late Elizabeth Threadgill Hitchcock.
He retired as a Major with the United States Marine Corps after 22 years of service to go into the gospel ministry. He pastored two churches in California before returning to Alabama in 1978. He pastored two churches in Alabama; Wilkes Baptist Church in Birmingham and Macedonia Baptist Church in Maplesville. He was interim pastor at several churches in Chilton County.
He served as chaplain of the Chilton Baptist Hospital. He was Sunday School director for the Chilton Baptist Association for several years. He was a Sunday School worker for the Alabama State Board of Missions, and during that time he went on mission trips to Nigeria, Alaska, and Wyoming. For many years he worked with ALCAP, speaking in schools to students about drugs, alcohol, bullying, and other subjects of concern to young people.
He loved his ministry, but still found time to be a loving husband and father. He will be missed. With his failing health in recent years, it will be a comfort to his family to know he is enjoying rest and peace in his Heavenly home.
He is survived by: His loving wife of 69 years, Peggy M. Hitchcock; his special son, Ray Hitchcock, Jr.; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
He is preceded in death by: Father, Omar Hitchcock; Mother, Elizabeth Hitchcock; Brothers, Robert (Joy) Hitchcock and Buddy (Cecilia) Hitchcock; and Sisters: Zoe (John) Sanderson, Ola Tackett, Dot (Beecher) Johnson, Judy Naler, and Mozelle (Gene) Kennedy.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at 2:00pm from the Jemison First Baptist Church with Rev. James Pate and Dr. Rex Kent officiating.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial with military honors will follow in the Midway Memorial Gardens in Jemison, AL.
The family request no flowers, but encourage memorial contributions be made to your favorite charity.
